Actions

As reported in Bulletin 28, circulated on December 16, 2004, Toronto City Council has now completed the major substantive actions with respect to the redevelopment of Union Station. The opportunity for public input on the critical aspects of the redevelopment is over.

Council has signed a 100 year lease, giving control of the Station to the Union Pearson Group for the next century. Union Pearson's plan is to build a second concourse in the basement of the west portion of the Station so that GO Transit will have two concourses, each filled with about two dozen staircases giving access to the platforms. It will build a food court under the VIA concourse, provide some more commercial space in the Station, and renovate the Great Hall and the west wing.

The city's Master Plan does not require changes to the existing platforms, tracks or roof, which can be considered the guts of the Station, and these are not part of the Union Pearson plan. This means the guts will remain unchanged for the foreseeable future while Union Pearson builds under and around them, making it much more difficult to provide wide, comfortable platforms, install escalators to link the concourses and the platforms, or build an attractive new roof over the tracks in the future.

The process by which Toronto City Council got itself into such a mess during the last three years can be understood by reading the Bulletins that we have produced and that are on this web site.

Since it appears that substantive decisions have been taken, unless something astounding occurs - and the Union Station story is replete with astounding actions - we do not expect to add to this site after the December 16, 2004 Bulletin.
